Georgia CASA Mission, Vision, Values & Purpose

MISSION

Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. develops and supports court-sanctioned, community-based programs that provide trained and supervised volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings.

VISION

Each abused or neglected child involved in juvenile court proceedings shall have a safe and permanent home.

What is a CASA?

Every child should have a safe, permanent home, but many do not. In Georgia, approximately 13,000 children at any one time are entangled in the juvenile justice and foster care systems because they are victims of abuse or neglect. A large majority of the children are taken from their homes and placed in an already overburdened system where they can get "lost" for months and even years.

Court Appointed Special Advocate Programs provide an innovative cost-effective approach to a very urgent crisis. Community-based programs recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers to provide individualized advocacy for these innocent victims and an independent source of information for the judge who must decide their future.

What does a CASA do?

CASA volunteers serve as the eyes and ears of the court. They gather information from anyone who may be able to shed light on the child's needs. The CASA volunteer then goes to court and makes recommendations to the judge, based on his/her independent assessment, about what is in the child's best interests. The CASA volunteer remains involved until the case is permanently resolved to keep the focus on the child.

VALUES

  • Volunteers are the foundation of the CASA program.
  • Communities offer a solid foundation to advocate for abused and neglected children.
  • Advocacy should be based on the culture and language that is familiar to the child.
  • Assuring quality is paramount in advocating effectively for the best interest of children.
  • Being focused, accountable and providing measurable results promotes the integrity of CASA
  • Prudent resource management is essential.
  • All relationships should be dealt with in a caring, open and trustworthy manner.
