Leadership, Growth, and Collaboration with DeKalb County CASA

In any mission-driven organization, a strong board can mean the difference between simply operating and truly thriving. For DeKalb County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the focus has been on building a collaborative and growth-focused board that reflects both the diversity and the commitment needed to support children and families involved in the foster care system. DeKalb County CASA Board Chair Alecea (and recipient of Georgia CASA’s annual award Board Member of the Year) and Executive Director Tara shared insights into their approach to board leadership, revealing how intentional recruiting, a commitment to diversity, and a culture of critical thinking have helped create an impactful, cohesive team.

Intentional Leadership and the Growth Mindset

For Alecea, building a strong board is about finding individuals with a shared commitment to service and a genuine passion for helping others. Rather than recruiting solely within familiar circles, she advocates looking for people who are already actively serving their communities. “Look in spaces where you already see people who are serving,” she said, emphasizing the importance of identifying candidates who are driven by purpose rather than recognition.

This intentional approach to board-building supports DeKalb CASA’s mission of creating a supportive environment for children experiencing foster care. By cultivating a board that is both mission-driven and deeply connected to the community, Alecea and Tara foster a growth mindset within the board. “Growth doesn’t happen by accident,” Alecea noted. “It comes from planning, from setting our sights on what matters, and making sure our team is aligned.”

Encouraging Collaboration Through Critical Thinking

When it comes to building a collaborative environment, both Alecea and Tara see critical thinking as essential. Differing opinions are welcomed on DeKalb CASA’s board, with Alecea and Tara ensuring that all members feel comfortable contributing ideas and voicing concerns. “I want to make sure that everyone is heard,” Alecea shared. “You wouldn’t be on this board if we didn’t respect your position.”

For Tara, the key to fostering collaboration lies in distinguishing between critical thinking and constant criticism. “You have to know the difference between a different opinion and someone that’s indifferent,” she explained. By focusing on respectful, mission-focused debate, DeKalb CASA’s board members are encouraged to ask hard questions and challenge assumptions in constructive ways. This culture of open dialogue not only strengthens trust among board members but also aligns them around their shared purpose.

Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy of Service

As DeKalb CASA looks to the future, Alecea and Tara share a vision of growth that goes hand in hand with deepening community connections. They hope to grow the board to its full capacity under the bylaws, bringing in even more voices that reflect DeKalb’s rich diversity. But for Alecea, the goal isn’t just about adding numbers; it’s about creating a board that is respected and recognized for the impact it makes.

“I’d like for us to become known in the community because of the works that we do—not because more children are entering the foster care system, but because of the impact CASA volunteers have for who are already there,” Alecea said. Both she and Tara are committed to creating a legacy that will continue to empower DeKalb CASA’s work, ensuring that every child they serve feels seen, valued, and supported.

In their words, “It’s not just about growing for growth’s sake; it’s about being present, being active, and making sure that each member has a voice. That’s what builds a board that lasts.”
